The View From 220 was the first of the series of Palm Beach paintings, painted from
the second floor window of the apartment on Australian Avenue looking west to the
Brazilian Court Hotel. It was one of seven images chosen by the Palm Beach Board
of Realtors to use on the cover of their monthly magazine. Prophetically, of the
initial seven chosen, View From 220 was the first S. Thompson painting to be used
on the cover of the magazine. There have been well over forty covers since then attributed
to S. Thompson in what is a substantial body of work in its own right. The Board
of Realtors primarily purchased giclee copies of original art. The View From 220
original is in the collection of the artist and while many people have purchased
giclee prints of the image the artist would find it difficult to sell the first of
what has become a major and unique body of work mostly having to do with Palm Beach.
The Board of Realtors held a charity auction of their cover art and View From 220
was bid up to $2400 for a small giclee print. It indicated acceptance and recognition
of the Palm Beach series on a level that is gratifying.
